A stage-by-stage guide to the Growing with Bumkins Set: Disney Mickey Mouse, from first purees with the silicone first feeding set to self-feeding with Mickey Chewtensils.
Quick answer
Use the Growing with Bumkins Set: Disney Mickey Mouse in two clear stages: start with the Mickey Mouse Silicone First Feeding Set for supported spoon-feeding and texture exploration, then move to the Mickey Chewtensils once your baby grabs and brings objects to their mouth.
Why the set is built around two stages, not one
Many feeding sets assume one developmental moment. This set pairs a stable first-feeding base with a later self-feeding tool, so you are not buying a second set the moment your baby's dexterity changes. The tradeoff is that you will use only part of the set at first; the Chewtensils may sit in the drawer for a few weeks until your baby shows the signs below. That is normal, and it is better than rushing the second stage.
When to move from the first feeding set to the Chewtensils
The move is driven by your baby's skills, not by age alone. Watch for your baby opening their mouth for the spoon, grabbing the spoon or food, and bringing hands to the mouth with some accuracy. If they still swipe food off the tray or cannot hold a utensil, keep using the first feeding set a little longer. The Chewtensils are sized for small hands and made with soft silicone for tender gums, which makes them a gentler first utensil than a rigid spoon.
Step-by-step: using the set through each feeding stage
- 1. Set up the first feeding set: Place the Mickey Mouse Silicone First Feeding Set on a flat, stable surface in front of your baby. Check that the base sits flush and does not rock when pressed. A wobbly base usually means the surface is not flat; move to a different spot or use a mat underneath.
- 2. Start with small, soft portions: Begin with a tablespoon or two of a smooth puree or soft mash. Offer it on the spoon and let your baby set the pace, watching for signs of fullness such as turning away or closing the mouth. Do not refill the bowl to encourage more eating; a small portion makes it easier to read fullness cues.
- 3. Introduce the Chewtensils as a separate play-and-taste tool: Hand your baby a Mickey Chewtensil during a calm moment, not mid-meal. Let them hold, mouth, and explore it while you supervise. This builds comfort before they try to scoop food with it. Skip this step if your baby is already grabbing the spoon confidently; go straight to step 4.
- 4. Move to self-feeding with the Chewtensils: Once your baby brings the Chewtensil to their mouth on their own, pre-load it with a thick puree or soft food and place it on the tray. Let them pick it up and try. Expect misses and mess; that is part of learning. If your baby repeatedly drops the utensil without attempting to mouth it, return to step 3 for a few more days.
- 5. Combine both stages for mixed meals: Use the first feeding set for foods your baby still needs help with and the Chewtensils for foods they can practice self-feeding. You do not have to retire the first feeding set when self-feeding begins. Keep the first feeding set in rotation until your baby can reliably scoop from it without help.
